Tesco Personal Finance has scotched plans to extend the trial of

its state of the art in-store video conference booth because it has

flopped with shoppers.

The booths were introduced in September last year to give shoppers

access to advice about Tesco financial products. Yet fewer than ten

people have used the eight booths to ask about Tesco pensions, which

have been available for six months.

An equally low number have used the booths to find out about other Tesco

financial products, such as loans and savings accounts.

David Graham, chief executive of Tesco’s pensions arm, believes

reluctance to use the booths stems from shoppers ’shyness’ and added

that it might have more success by offering the service to PC home

users. ’People prefer to make telephone calls from the privacy of their

homes,’ he said.
