Tesco aims to usurp Comet in electricals

LONDON - Tesco is planning to overtake Comet in electrical, as it ramps up its efforts in the category in the run-up to Christmas, according to The Mail on Sunday.

The retail giant, following a trial, is deploying 1,000 staff trained to sell electrical products in 185 Tesco Extra stores by the end of October.

DSG International, which owns the Currys and PC World brands, is currently the market leader in electrical sales.

currently accounts for one in three DVD player sales and one in three small screen TV sales in the UK.

The news comes as Tesco increases its efforts in non-food with the launch of its new online clothing website on Saturday. Terry Green , chief executive of Clothing at Tesco  said: ‘We want to give all Tesco customers, wherever they live in the UK, the ability to purchase clothing from Tesco and the launch of the online store will allow us to do this by making clothes shopping convenient for our customers.'

The launch of the website is being supported by a marketing campaign, spanning TV, online and in print media.
