Terrestrial TV takes a ratings hit

Both ITV1 and BBC1 suffered their worst-ever month of ratings in August. Unofficial overnight figures show that ITV1 had an average all-day share of 15.15% for the whole month, down from its previous worst figure of 16.1% in July. BBC1 also had its worst monthly all-time share at 19.51%.

Channel 4 saw its worst ratings for 25 years. Excluding its +1 timeshift service, Channel 4 had an all-time share of 6.47% for August. With Channel 4+1 included, it rises to 7.3%, down slightly year-on-year.

Channel Five recorded an audience share of 4.9%, up marginally on the same month last year.

Unconsolidated live ratings figures, excluding timeshifted, or recorded viewing, show that ITV1 had its lowest ever share of the affluent ABC1 demographic in August at 13.5%, down from July's previous lowest ever figure of 13.8%.

ITV also struggled to bring in 16- to 34-year-olds with its share falling to 10.12%. This is the lowest since August 2008 when the age group averaged 10.13% of its audience. ITV1's peak-time share was 19.4% in August.

ITV1 began airing The X Factor at the end of August pulling in 9.9 million viewers and a 48% share for the launch of the sixth series. It will run throughout September as part of the broadcaster's autumn schedule.

ITV is planning to launch a ITV1+1 channel in October if CRR regulations are relaxed this month.
