Telewest to launch PVR service as it earmarks 2006 for full TV-on-demand rollout

LONDON - Telewest is to complete the rollout of its TV-on-demand service to more than 1m customers by 2006 and has revealed plans to launch its own ad-skipping personal video recorder service.

Telewest aims to complete the national rollout of TV-on-demand, which launched in January, to over 1m customers by early 2006.

It said it would invest Â£20m on TV-on-demand and launching a personal video recorder to take on Sky+ later this year.

The extended TV-on-demand service will include more films and the best of the previous week's programming.

Eric Tveter, president and chief operating officer at Telewest, said: "We are transforming TV as we know it by giving consumers both a superb choice of programmes and the flexibility to watch them whenever they want."

Telewest Broadband also announced a phased analogue switchover programme to turn its remaining 171,000 analogue TV customers to digital by the end of 2006 -- in line with the government proposed 2012 analogue switch off.

The news comes as Telewest increased its subscriber base to 1.8m and grew revenues by 3% to £338m in its full-year financial results released yesterday.

In addition, the company is widely anticipated to merge with its chief rival NTL in a bid to take on the might of satellite giant BSkyB.

Telewest was believed to be meeting advisers in New York this week to prepare for the merger.

Analysts have also interpreted moves by NTL to sell its TV masts business and Irish division as a sign that preparations for a merger are imminent.
