Teletext ready to launch C5 service

Teletext, the company which operates the text services for ITV and Channel 4, looks set to add the licence for Channel 5's text service to its operations for a bargain price.

Applications for the text service licence closed last Friday (March 1) with Teletext making the only bid.

The proposed service, if the bid is successful, will launch in August and carry much of the same news and sport content as the ITV and Channel 4 services.

The previous licence holder, a joint venture from C5 and Sky Television, asked for the licence to be revoked last year. They had bid £1.5m for the licence back in 1997. By contrast, Teletext bid £35,000 for the licence this time round.
