Telecoms giants consider 3G link-up to cut costs

A number of telecoms operators are believed to be considering joining forces to share some of the huge costs involved in developing the next generation of mobile networks.

LONDON (Brand Republic) - A number of telecoms operators are believed to be considering joining forces to share some of the huge costs involved in developing the next generation of mobile networks.

BT鈥檚 German mobile operator Viag Interkom revealed yesterday it was talking to rival companies, while the UK鈥檚 Orange, Vodafone and BT Cellnet are said to be considering similar options.

BT Cellnet said it was keen on sharing network infrastructure for both financial and environmental reasons. It added that it intended to lease out sites on which rival operators could install third-generation equipment.
