TalkSport gives up television ambitions

LONDON - TalkSport has handed back its TV licence to Ofcom, reversing former boss Kelvin MacKenzie's decision two years ago to expand the business beyond radio.

TalkSport TV launched on Sky Channel 235 in October 2006, providing six hours of programming a day with plans to provide more if enough viewers tuned in.

The channel essentially televised the proceedings in the studio with a presenter filling in when radio content could not be transmitted to TV.

TalkSport's spokesman said the broadcast was discontinued at the end of September last year. This followed MacKenzie's departure from the station's parent, The Wireless Group, in the wake of its takeover by Ulster Television last summer.

By giving back its broadcast licence back to the regulator, TalkSport has shown its future plans do not include a TV presence.

This contrasts with the strategy of GCap's Classic FM, which has a branded TV channel on Sky Channel 359 and NTL Channel 921.
