TalkSport also walked away with the gold award for broadcasting and the technical innovation award for its World Cup 2006 coverage, with TalkSport broadcaster Bill Ridley also taking home the programmer of the year gong.
The station was praised for its quality output and judges said its success demonstrates that commercial radio can invest in a speech format to compete effectively with the BBC.
Scott Taunton, managing director of station owner UTV Radio, said: "TalkSport has developed significantly as a station, both in our output and commercially. Having said that, to receive the recognition from our peers which we have had today is a special moment for the station."
Portsmouth's 107.4 The Quay won the small station of the year award, while Belfast's Citybeat took home the gong for mid-sized station.
The digital station of the year went to Gaydar Radio, which beat GCap's Planet Rock and The Jazz.
Adam Catterall of 97.4 Rock Radio took the presenter of the year prize, beating the host of the event, Virgin Radio's Christian O'Connell.
Sales and marketing were also highly contested awards, and Virgin Radio was awarded the national sales accolade.
Bournemouth's Wave 105 FM took the local prize, and 100.7 Heart FM was awarded the commercial radio marketing award.
It is the first year that new radio marketing body the RadioCentre has taken charge of the awards and it received 470 entries from which to choose the winners.
A new accolade, the chairman's award, was introduced by the RadioCentre, and was awarded to GCap's new digital station, theJazz.
