The Independent, now published only as a tabloid, continued to grow, posting its ninth consecutive month of year-on-year sales increases.
June was The Independent's first month as a fully compact paper and it sold a total of 261,575 copies, an increase of 18.8 per cent on June 2003.
This is the paper's largest market share for eight years.
The Times' decision to roll out its tabloid edition nationally also paid off. The Times increased its tabloid distribution to cover Scotland, Wales and the west of England on 15 June. Sales rose by 4.5 per cent to 621,325 copies.
All titles in the traditional tabloid market except The Daily Express and Daily Star recorded circulation falls.
The Daily Mirror's slump continued. Last month, it sold 1,833,980 copies, down 5.9 per cent on last June. The Sun was down 4.6 per cent on last year to 3,348,220 copies. The Daily Express was up 1 per cent on last year while the Daily Star increased by 2.4 per cent.
Ivan Fallon, the chief executive of Independent News & Media, said: "The success of the compact has once again exceeded all expectations."
