Tabloid editions pay off for publishers

The launch of tabloid versions of The Independent and The Times is continuing to pay off for their publishers.

January sales of The Independent rose by 12.1 per cent year on year to 248,876. Its sales were up by almost 5 per cent on the previous month after the newly launched tabloid version of The Independent on Sunday sold an extra 50,000 copies.

The Times is now selling around 110,000 copies of its tabloid version.

Its circulation is still down year on year by 1.6 per cent, but its 660,713 sales are an increase of 3.8 per cent on the previous month.

Circulation increases for the two titles coincided with news that the Independent founder, Stephen Glover, is building a team to launch a tabloid-sized daily aiming to sell 100,000 copies.

The Guardian has ruled out launching a tabloid edition. Carolyn McCall, the managing director of Guardian Newspapers, said: "If we went tabloid it would change the values to the extent that it wouldn't suit The Guardian product."

The Guardian's year-on-year January sales were down 6.5 per cent to 383,157, while The Daily Telegraph fell 3.4 per cent to 914,981. The Telegraph is still refusing to say whether it will launch a tabloid version.

Sales of leading tabloids The Sun and the Daily Mirror were both down.

The Sun fell 4.7 per cent to 3,410,701 and the Daily Mirror 7.3 per cent to 1,919,125.

The Daily Star was the only daily title to post both a month-on-month and year-on-year increase, recording a circulation of 901,879. Both the Daily Express and Daily Mail had a slight drop in sales.

A majority of Sunday titles showed declines in sales with the Daily Star Sunday and The Business the exceptions.
