Porritt was speaking at the third annual Sustainable Events Summit on Monday 19 April at One Wimpole Street, London.
Porritt's address amounted to a call to arms for the industry, he suggested that event organisers should not be blinded by environmental issues, but also consider the wider impact of events.
Other speakers at the event included, Good Energy CEO Juliet Davenport, RockCorps CEO Stephen Green, LOCOG corporate sustainability manager Phil Cumming, Tottenham Hotspur executive director Donna Cullen and GLA head of events Patrick Loy.
