Super Size Me publicity goes on as it makes Oscar list

NEW YORK - 'Super Size Me', the documentary that gave McDonald's a publicity headache earlier this year, is set for another burst of attention with news that it is in the running for best documentary at next year's Academy Awards.

The film, which tracks the life of director Morgan Spurlock when he decides to eat nothing but McDonald's for 30 days, is one of 12 on a long list, from which the five nominees will be chosen.

With 'Fahrenheit 9/11' out of contention because Michael Moore is entering it in another category, 'Super Size Me' is in with a good chance of winning a statue -- and attracting another round of publicity at the same time.

Spurlock is shown gaining weight and falling into poor health after adopting his McDonald's-only diet.

When the low-budget film was released around the world earlier this year, McDonald's went on a PR fire-fighting operation to counter the negative publicity it generated.

In the UK, it took out a series of low-key press ads that tried to discourage people from watching the film by outlining its premise, but admitting that eating too much McDonald's would not be good for people.

In the US, the counter campaign was more aggressive, describing 'Super Size Me' as a "gross-out movie".

For the Oscar for best documentary feature, it will compete against the British film 'Touching the Void', which tells the story of mountaineer Joe Simpson's incredible survival in Peru, along with 'The Story of the Weeping Camel' and 'Tupac: Resurrection'.

Last year's award was won by Michael Moore, for the film 'Bowling For Columbine'. Moore was both booed and given a standing ovation by the audience at the ceremony in February when he said "Shame on you Mr Bush", because of the invasion of Iraq.
