Super Bowl to be shown in HD on Sky Sports

LONDON - Super Bowl XLI is to be the first US sports event to be screened in high definition and Dolby Digital surround sound by Sky Sports in February 2007.

There have already been more than 100 live outside broadcasts in HD across the high definition services Sky Sports HD1, Sky Sports HD2 and Premplus HD with more than 25 HD broadcasts scheduled for February 2007.

Super Bowl XLI will be the climax of the busiest season to date of the American NFL on Sky Sports, with live coverage of up to four regular season matches each weekend. Sky Sports confirmed a new four-year deal in September to broadcast NFL live games and support programming.

Super Bowl is known for its big-name halftime shows with Prince expected to make an appearance in 2007. Previous performers include The Rolling Stones, U2 and Sir Paul McCartney, and infamously Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson, who suffered a "wardrobe malfunction" on stage.

The Barclays Premiership, Uefa Champions League, the Ryder Cup and Rugby Union were all shown in HD in 2006.
