The number one spot was confirmed in the latest audit by the ABC Electronic, which put page impressions at The Sun for April at a whopping 107,845,136.
The figure puts it more than 2m ahead of the latest figures for Guardian Media Group's Guardian Unlimited network of websites.
Pete Picton, The Sun Online editor, said: "These figures prove what we have long believed. Not only are users flocking to the site because of the unique mix of fun, news and gossip, but they are developing a relationship with it and telling their friends. The result is that more people are spending more time exploring the site."
The Sun has gone from strength to strength online and has chalked up a number of successes including Best Online Property from a Media Owner at the 2003 Revolution Awards.
The Sun Online is also proving a commercial success with its fantasy football game generating more than £1m last year, with subscription-based football scores, horoscopes and racing tip services also doing well.
The paper also does well online through its raft of interactive services such as 'Big Brother'-related SMS text messaging, which are proving to be another big earner. Last year, during 'Big Brother 3', more than 1m messages were sent.
Traffic has been steadily growing since its redesign in September 2001 after the paper flirted with being an ISP with its Currant Bun and later The Bun online service.
David Roddick, head of strategic sales at News Group Digital, said: "The audience is familiar with the brand and they trust The Sun to remain true to its core values in both paper and digital editions. Advertisers can use this brand equity with more creative scope and accountability than is easily achieved in press."
The traffic success has also helped The Sun Online score with advertisers. Upcoming deals include an exclusive deal with UIP that will see The Sun Online turn itself green to celebrate the arrival of 'Hulk' in cinemas on July 18.
The Sun Online won the deal, negotiated by Mediaedge:cia, after beating off competition from all the major portals to host the Eyeblaster execution during the week leading up to the film's release.
Then on Thursday and Friday July 17 and 18 users will see the famous Sun red transformed to Hulk green, as the Marvel Comics legend takes over the site.
