Despite the price cut The Sun will continue to trade at a significant discount to rival the Daily Mirror, which is currently priced at 40p.

The News International-owned red-top cut its cover price from 35p to 20p in September last year across London and the South East in an effort to keep its circulation above 3 million copies. The strategy paid off except for in December when its circulation fell below 3m copies for the first month since 1974.

Circulation revenue across the Capital and the South East accounts for around 20% of The Sun's sales.

The latest ABC figures for March reveal The Sun's circulation rose 2.12% year-on-year to 3,096,086 copies.
