Sugar prices predicted to rise

LONDON - The price of sugar is set to rise as a consequence of freak weather conditions in Brazil and India caused wholesale prices to hit a 28-year high.

While this is unlikely to have a direct knock-on effect on the price of sugar in the UK as the European Union protects sugar prices, it could lead to a shortage of other sweeteners as big sugar importers such as China turn to alternatives.

Although the shelf price of sugar is unlikely to soar in the UK, chocolate makers are likely to be more concerned about the price of cocoa, according to today's Daily Telegraph, which has also soared.
