Launched in 1980, i-D will celebrate its 300th issue next month before changing the frequency of editions in September.
An August issue will be on sale in July to honour all pre-booked pages, but all future issues will be published in September, October, November, February, March and April.
This leaves a two-month gap after the November issue and a four-month gap after the April issue.
Terry and Tricia Jones, the owners of i-D magazine, said the move was in response to and "in line with the current economic climate and in order to protect [the magazine's] 30 year heritage".
They said in a statement: "We see this re-structure as a reinforcement of position and strength towards a magazine and brand we are passionate about and have protected for so long.
"As one of the most respected and loved independent voices within the international fashion community, i-D is determined to maintain its unique status bridging the space between high fashion and street savvy."
I-D is also planning to redesign its website and relaunch it during the summer.
The website will be updated more frequently following the relaunch.
Special projects will continue to be published on approval.
I-D, which always features a model winking on its cover, retails for £4 and claims to have an international circulation of 73,106.
