Streaker takes UK tradition to all-American Super Bowl

NEW YORK - A tiny slice of British culture managed to infiltrate Sunday's all-American Super Bowl celebrations, when a streaker made it on to the pitch advertising an internet casino.

It was the first US appearance for British streaker Mark Roberts, who managed to evade security by dressing as a referee until he jumped out of the crowd. He appeared with the words "GoldenPalace.com" in henna tattoo on his chest and back, along with the words "Super Bowel" -- and a plastic football to protect his modesty.

Unfortunately for the internet casino that sponsored him, CBS did not broadcast the incident. Roberts was tackled to the ground by New England linebacker Matt Chatham and hauled off by security officials.

The Super Bowl XXXVIII broadcast was the familiar advertising bonanza, with humour being the order of the day, after several years where the political situation dictated a more sensitive approach.

According to a poll by America Online, the five most popular advertisements are all for Budweiser or Bud Light beer. The poll has already received more than 100,000 votes, with Bud Light's Sleigh Ride spot by DDB Chicago leading the way. In the spot, a couple's romantic horse ride is ruined by the beast's flatulence.

AOL also sponsored the half-time entertainment, which did not go without incident. Justin Timberlake has issued an apology for ripping off part of Janet Jackson's costume during a performance and exposing her breast. As luck would have it, Jackson happened to be wearing a silver nipple tassel at the time, thus preventing her from being totally exposed.

New England Patriots won the game 32-29 against the Carolina Panthers, taking victory in the game's final seconds.

Timberlake issued a statement saying: "I am sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance of the Super Bowl. It was not intentional and is regrettable."

CBS raked in an average of $2.3m (£1.26m) for each 30-second spot broadcast during the game in Houston, Texas. MTV produced the half-time entertainment.
