The first of the cash-less cards were handed out free to commuters yesterday (Monday) at Waterloo Station. Each card comes preloaded with enough credit for users to purchase three copies of the Evening Standard. Customers touch the card on a yellow pad on the news-stand, and the vendor hands them their paper. Vendors will continue to accept normal cash payments.
Once the card is registered, users are able to top up their Eros card online using credit or debit cards.
The scheme rewards users with five free song downloads from the Apple iTunes website every time they top up their card, and the more credits they put on their card, the less they have to pay for each newspaper.
Opportunities for other discounts for Eros holders with third-party brands are being investigated.
