Springer to report on US Presidential election for Capital

LONDON – The likes of Radio 4's Jim Naughtie and John Humphrys will have a new rival as former chatshow host Jerry Springer has agreed to join the political team at Capital Radio for its US election coverage.

Springer will take part in Capital's US election coverage, which rolls out on November 1, in a show called 'Jerry's Rough Guide to Elections'. The slot is designed to demystify the election process for listeners and explain how the Presidential election works, what they can expect to happen and when.

Further elements of the election's news coverage will include Capital Radio news correspondent Josie Mearing reporting live from Washington DC from Monday November 1 to Wednesday November 3.

She will be speaking to an American and British family living in Washington to ask them what they see the big political issues affecting their everyday lives as. Mearing will also interview the editor of The Afro American Newspaper in Washington to discuss what the important issues are for African-Caribbean Americans and present a fly-on-the-wall report from a British school in the US capital.

Springer, a Democrat, entered politics in his hometown of Cincinnati in the 1970s serving on the City Council before becoming mayor in 1978. According to USA Today, the spiciest episode of his political career came when he paid a prostitute with a cheque while on the council.

He quit politics in 1982 and joined a Cincinnati television station as a news anchor and commentator before beginning his chatshow, which became infamous for chair-tossing brawls and a line-up of strippers, pimps, cheating spouses and obscenities.

Justin Kings, group head of Capital News, said: "Jerry's experience in American politics and unique presenting style will make for some fascinating and enjoyable content."
