The Spectator and the Literary Review, along with The Scientist and the London Review of Books, are the first four magazines available on the new platform, which was created by Exact Editions, a web-based distribution and marketing company launched last year.
Trial issues of all the magazines are currently available for free from the Exact Editions website (). The web page is intended to look and feel like the physical magazine.
Exact Editions claims that: "There are no downloads, no Flash and no messing around, just straightforward click and search, point and browse."
Daryl Rayner, Exact editions, managing director, warned that publishers who have not explored the digital magazine opportunity were missing a key section of the market that is set to grow with web use.
He said: "Digital magazines are not an alternative to print magazines but a legitimate and natural extension of the print product."
Annual subscriptions to the magazines are sold from an online shop and subscribers are immediately able to access current and back issues. The company hopes that the service will prove popular with overseas or mobile subscribers and those who want instant access to a magazine's archive.
