Sorrell says Bollore likely to win Aegis battle

LONDON – Sir Martin Sorrell, the WPP Group chief executive, says that it is only a matter of time before Vincent Bollore snaps up UK media buying and market research group Aegis.

Sorrell talks regularly with Bollore, who owns 29% of Aegis and who recently failed to win two seats on its board.

"I think he wants to buy the company -- but I don't know why, you'll have to ask him," Sorrell said speaking at WPP's AGM.

Sorrell is interested in adding the Aegis market research business Synovate to his WPP empire, while Havas chairman Bollore would take its Carat and Vizeum media buying operations and combine it with MPG.

Last week, Bollore signalled in Cannes that he is far from done with Aegis and said he had not ruled out raising his stake to the 30% mark, which under London Stock Exchange rules would trigger an automatic takeover bid.

Sorrell said: "The children of Israel went round Jericho seven or nine times, maybe he [Bollore] has another seven or eight to go."

Sorrell also went on to dismiss the conflict of interest defence that Aegis has used to rally shareholders against Bollore. He cited the example of Omnicom executives previously sitting on the Aegis board.

Aegis argues that because of Bollore's chairmanship of Havas there is no place for his representatives on the board.

"It's a little bit strange that the argument of conflict of interest could be made when you had a direct parallel with Omnicom and Aegis," Sorrell said.
