Dutta will step down from his role as corporate vice-president and head of marketing at the handset manufacturer next week. He is not thought to have another job to go to.
His departure comes just days after Sony Ericsson warned that profits for 2008 could be down on last year due to slowing sales of its mid- to high-end handsets across Europe.
Earlier this year, Dutta appointed McCann Ericsson to revamp the brand's global marketing strategy, replacing Saatchi & Saatchi as lead creative agency on the account.
He also recently outlined plans to boost Sony Ericsson's digital adspend to £13m as part of a strategy to give the internet a more central role in its global marketing strategy.
Dutta joined Sony Ericsson in 2002 and became head of marketing in 2003. He has been instrumental in refreshing the brand, helping to make it the world's fifth-biggest mobile phone manufacturer behind Nokia, Motorola, Samsung and LG.
'I am very proud of the achievements that my team and I have made in growing the brand and look forward to the next challenge in my career,' said Dutta.
Sony Ericsson is currently searching for a new head of marketing to replace him.
