While commercial radio was outshone by the BBC last Monday night, the judges acknowledged the efforts of stations with a narrower target audience. QSoft-owned Gaydar took home Digital Terrestrial Station of the Year while GCap's Planet Rock was rewarded with the Station Imaging trophy.
GCap's Classic FM also won the UK station of the year in 1993, 1997 and 2000, when owned by GWR.
Steve Orchard, group operations director at GCap Media, said: "The digitisation of radio distribution has allowed radio operators to target better-defined genres, because with DAB radio we have greater capacity.
"Kids, classic rock, classical, jazz and so on are all formats that have a clear focus and can excel at their chosen genre. We can expect these types of stations to win more and more."
