The survey, by research company InSites Consulting, reports that 72% of internet users worldwide use at least one social networking site.
Eastern Europe and Asia are the regions with the lowest use of social networking, with four out of 10 users, while South America has the highest at 95%. British users mostly visit Facebook (50%) or Twitter (42%).
Facebook is the most popular social media destination for global internet users, followed by MySpace and Twitter.
The survey also indicates that the majority of internet users are members of two or more social networking sites.
InSites' Stephen Van Bellehgam said: "It is becoming difficult for new social sites to recruit members. The majority of surfers are happy with their current situation and do not want to become members of a new platform. Furthermore, they do not intend to replace or reduce their use of their current sites."
A total of 2,800 internet users from around the world were surveyed for the study.
