Snowboarding company meets stiff resistance over slang ad

LONDON - A snowboarding company has run into trouble over its use of snowboarding slangword "stiffy", also known as a term for an erection, in a competition encouraging snowboarders as young as 10 to take part.

The leaflets, promoting a snowboarding competition in Milton Keynes, show a cartoon character with a pronounced bulge in his trousers, accompanied by the copy: "Let's see what you've got! Board stiffy competition. Age 10-17s only".



Stiffy, the organisers of the competition, have had to put the campaign on ice following a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority that the logo was offensive and unsuitable to promote a children's event.



The word "stiffy" refers to a stunt in which the boarder leans forward with straight legs and holds the front of the board while in the air.



The complaint was upheld and the organiser apologised for any offence caused. It said that its target audience was snowboarders, skateboarders and surfers aged 16 and upwards, even though the leaflet specifically referred to those under the age of consent.



The organiser also argued that the campaign helped to raise the profile of the little-covered sport and added that many parents had showed their support.
