Sky wins the Oscars

BSkyB has secured an exclusive multi-year deal with Buena Vista International Television to broadcast the Oscars.

Coverage of the 77th Academy Awards will kick off across the Sky network in January 2005 with coverage of the nominations, running up to the actual event on Sunday 27 February.

The whole network will be involved, with full live coverage of the event being shown on Sky Movies, additional programming on Sky One, news coverage on Sky news and further programming across Sky Travel and the Biography Channel.

Even Sky's online platform will be incorporated in the deal, with behind-the-scenes coverage, competitions and other extras.

Sophie Turner Laing, deputy managing director of Sky Networks, said Sky would "cover the event in a way that no other broadcaster could".

The agreement was brokered by Sam Rowden, head of acquisitions at Sky One and Haydn Arndt, sales director of BVIT's UK operation.
