Sky Sports and ITV retain Uefa Champions League for three years

LONDON - Sky Sports and ITV have retained the 2006-2009 UK Uefa Champions League television rights in a deal that replicates the previous deal signed three years ago.

ITV has retained the two Tuesday night live matches and Sky Sports will show the other six group matches.

The satellite broadcaster also retained all live matches played on Wednesday, consisting of up to eight matches at the group stage.

In addition, Sky Sports has agreed an online streaming package with Uefa, which allows Sky Sports Broadband to stream live coverage of up to eight matches simultaneously.

Vic Wakeling, managing director of Sky Sports, said the online streaming deal will allow the Sky to develop its broadband offering.

"This new deal guarantees us four more seasons of Uefa Champions League football in all, starting tonight, and allows us to develop and enhance this service still further," he said.

Sky and ITV only had one season left on its current 2002-2006 deal.

Earlier this year, it was reported that Sky Sports and ITV faced possible challenges from the BBC and Channel 4 for the rights to Uefa Champions League matches.

For Uefa, the problem with the BBC was that, being a public service broadcaster, it could not support match sponsors and could potentially devalue the overall package Uefa could offer any sponsors.

Separately, it was announced today that Sony has signed a multimillion-pound deal to become an official sponsor of the Uefa Champions League.

The three-year contract, which industry sources estimate could be worth £25m, begins at the start of the 2006/07 season. It follows the struggling electronics firm's deal with Fifa to become an official World Cup sponsor after next year's tournament in Germany.
