The pack includes one or two months' viewing, installation of a dish and box and a retail pack that tells the viewer everything they need to get started with Sky.
The £39.99 Sky Starter Pack will roll out to more than 1,000 Argos and Woolworth's stores across the UK with immediate effect, and from November to 60 of the largest Tesco's superstores, Tesco Extra.
The launch will be supported by in-store marketing activity, national press advertising and listings in each of the retailer's Christmas gift guides.
It marks the first time Sky has packaged its pay-TV service on a fully commercial basis so that it can be offered as a gift.
The Starter Pack will enable the customer to set up Sky in their home by simply calling and quoting a unique reference number, selecting a viewing package and arranging an installation date.
Jon Florsheim, managing director of BSkyB's sales, marketing and interactive, said: "The Sky Starter Pack makes our product available in a convenient form through mass merchandise retailers for the first time.
"This initiative is another part of our commitment to remove barriers to purchase and deliver great entertainment to consumers in a way that fits their own preferences."
James Murdoch, chief executive of BSkyB, announced earlier this year that the satellite broadcaster had set itself a target of 10m subscribers by 2010.
