Sky by Broadband is a free extra, giving subscribers to Sky's movies and/or sports packages access to the corresponding content via the internet. In addition, a Sky One entertainment package is forthcoming this year.
Richard Freudenstein, Sky's chief operating officer, said: "From today, a Sky Digital subscription includes the PC and mobile phone as well as the TV. We are giving millions of viewers the ability to download movies legally or to keep up with Sky on the move."
Available to download at are more than 200 movies, from blockbusters such as 'Spider-Man 2' to older titles such as 'Alien', and highlights of every Barclays Premiership and Uefa Champions League football match. The content can not be copied or transferred to another PC and movies will be deleted after 30 days.
The content will not be TV-quality, and Sky advises that over a 1MB broadband connection content will take as long to download as it does to watch.
The mobile service, Sky by Mobile, is also free for customers who subscribe to two or more premium channels or who have a registered SkyBet account, although mobile network operators will charge their own prices for access and the service is compatible with a restricted range of handsets.
SkyBet users will be able to place bets and manage their accounts. The service also includes news from Sky News, weather, daily celebrity news and movie reviews, and extensive personalised sports information including live scoreboards for a range of sports events.
