The actual amount paid by Sky has not been confirmed, however, the sum is believed to be similar to the £1.3bn paid by the broadcaster for four packages covering 2007 to 2010.
The deal will come as a relief to many football clubs as the money generated by the deal will offset an expected fall in season ticket demand for next season as consumers cut back on spending.
The two remaining packages, currently owned by Setanta, are still available.
There has been speculation this is because US broadcaster ESPN has submitted a similar bid.
The loss of Premier League football would be a major blow to Setanta leaving it only with select England internationals.
Under Premier League rules if two bids are within 10% of each other then the offers would have to be resubmitted.
Another scenario could see only one bidder involved, with its offer falling below the league’s reserve price. Either way Sky has said it will now bid for the remaining packages.
The highlights package for 2010 to 2013 was secured by the BBC last week.
