Sky attempts to keep new channel ITV3 off Freeview

LONDON - Sky is in talks to keep ITV3, the new drama and factual channel, off Freeview in an attempt to boost its flailing profits.

ITV is still undecided whether to launch the new channel on a free-to-air basis like ITV2 or to restrict it to a pay-TV only when it launches this autumn.

It is understood that Sky has approached the broadcaster with a number of incentives to make ITV3 a pay-TV offering in response to the fact Freeview is outselling Sky at a rate of 10 to one.

Talks on the future joint venture of Granada Plus and ITV's satellite carriage deal, due for renewal later this year are linked with the negotiations.
