Simon Thompson lands top Motorola Europe job

LONDON - Simon Thompson, the former Honda marketing director credited with some of the most innovative car advertising in the UK, is to become pan-European marketing chief of Motorola.

A spokeswoman for Motorola said Thompson, who left the Japanese car marque last month after 13 years, will join the company on 1 March as regional marketing director for Europe.

During his time at Honda, Thompson was responsible for its "cog" campaign, created by Wieden & Kennedy in 2003. He also handled the company's recent "impossible dream" and "choir" work.

Thompson joined Honda in 1993 and worked in a number of roles across its three divisions: cars, motorcycles and power equipment.

Motorola spends about £30m a year on advertising in Europe and is the second-biggest handset manufacturer in the world. The current campaign for its SLVR phone was produced by Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO; it centralised its European media account into MindShare last November.

At the end of last year Motorola was hit by the death of its marketing chief Geoffrey Frost, who had been with the company for six years.
