Silk Cut bows out with 'fat lady' ad swansong

Singing fat ladies will form the basis of Silk Cut's advertising swansong as owner Gallaher Tobacco faces up to the impending industry ad ban.

Silk Cut's creative agency M&C Saatchi has developed a press and poster campaign on the theme of the maxim: 'It's not over 'til the fat lady sings'. Gallaher confirmed it was considering the idea with a view to launching it in the coming weeks.

Silk Cut is also thought to be planning to equip some poster sites with plastic models of oversized women and megaphones that blare out music.

News of the campaign follows government confirmation that a sweeping ban on tobacco ads will come into force on February 14, six years after New Labour made it a manifesto commitment ahead of the 1997 General Election.

Gallaher's rivals, including Imperial Tobacco, are also understood to be planning farewell campaigns.
