Shane Meadows directs government ad on how to cut fuel bils

LONDON - The Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) will today launch a new TV ad campaign advising the public on how to cut their heating bills. It follows on from last week's pledge by Prime Minister Gordon Brown to spend nearly £1bn on making homes more energy efficient.

The ad, part of the Government's ACT ON CO2 campaign, was directed by Shane Meadows, famous for British movie This Is England and recent Eurostar-funded film Somers Town.

The Meadows' ad focuses on the efforts of a father to get his family to cut down on their energy use and energy bills. The campaign has been put together by creative agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO.

Calls to the Energy Saving Trust's ACT ON CO2 advice line have more than quadrupled since the PM's announcement last week. The Government has also launched a new online hub for energy efficiency advice, www.direct.gov.uk/actonco2.
