Event management company Beyond Certainty and the venue’s caterer, The London Kitchen, invited hundreds of guests to see the church as an event space for the first time.
Harry Stavrou, director of Beyond Certainty - which has a number of functioning and non-functioning churches in its portfolio - told Event St Edmund’s functioning status makes the space all the more striking.
"It’s still a functioning church which makes it a little bit more special for some people," he said.
"It’s one of those venues where, as long as you respect it, we can do something completely different for events. I had been passing the place for years, but it’s only when you go inside that you think, 'wow'."
The Grade II listed building, formally known as the Banker’s Church due to its location in the City, was designed by Sir Christopher Wren after being destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666.
Five hundred years later its Great Hall, which has capacity for up to 250 people, is now open for business.
Damian Clarkson, managing director of The London Kitchen, said: "It’s an amazing venue right in the centre of the City and makes a fantastic venue for conferences, meetings, dinners and receptions.
"This may be an historic building, but it is a brand new event venue for London, which is why we are delighted to be offering the event catering from launch until the autumn."
St Edmund also features a Vestry Hall, meeting rooms and a courtyard garden.
Mary Penley, event manager at St Edmund, said: "We are delighted to be working with The London Kitchen and Beyond Certainty in this exciting new chapter in the life of this historic city church."
