Setanta loses Scottish Premier League rights after missing £3m payment

LONDON - Setanta, the sports broadcaster currently engaged in rescue talks, has lost its rights to air 60 Scottish Premier League games per season until 2013/14 after failing to make an outstanding £3m payment.

In a statement, Lex Gold, executive Chairman of the SPL, said: "Setanta has been unable to meet our extended deadline for the outstanding £3 million payment to the SPL and, in terms of the notice previously issued, our British broadcasting rights for season 2009/10 and beyond revert to us."

"We are now actively engaging in the process of selling our domestic broadcasting rights for next season and beyond," he added.

That batch of rights - two sets of 23 live games on Saturday and Monday nights - are now being auctioned off, with BSkyB and ESPN thought likely bidders.

However, under European rules, BSkyB is not allowed a monopoly on English Premier League live TV rights and so will only be allowed to bid for one of the two packages, with the Monday night package thought to be in its sights.
