September 11 coverage wins New York Times record number of Pulitzers

NEW YORK - Coverage of the September 11 terrorist attacks and the aftermath has seen the New York Times walk away with a record number of Pulitzer Prizes at yesterday's award announcement.

September 11 coverage wins New York Times record number of Pulitzers

The New York Times won seven prizes in total, including six for coverage of the atrocities. It is the first time in the Pulitzer's 86-year-history that a single newspaper has won more than three awards in a single year.

The Wall Street Journal also received an award for its coverage of terrorism. Staff at the newspaper were forced to evacuate their building, which is opposite the second World Trade Centre tower, and cover events from around the city. The newspaper won two Pulitzers in total.

Other papers to win two awards included the Washington Post and the Los Angeles Times.

Pulitzer Prizes are awarded to distinguished reporting, editorial, letters, drama, music and photography in the US media each year. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in May.
