Second Lapland-style attraction closes as Alton Towers offers free alternative

A second Lapland-style attraction has shut down in the West Midlands due to poor ticket sales in the same week Alton Towers offered guests who were upset by the closure of Lapland New Forest a free day out at a Christmas-themed event.

Alton Towers will hold the festivities on 13 December, with guests able to meet and greet Santa's reindeer before visiting Santa in his hidden grotto located in the depths of the woodland behind the Hotel, where all children receive a gift.

Children's rides will also be available in the elves' playground, and the tropical waterpark and golf courses will also be on offer.

"After hearing the reports that many people were left disappointed at Lapland New Forest, we immediately felt compelled to help," said Alton Towers Resort sales and marketing director Morwenna Angove. "We will be adding an extra day of Christmas celebrations on Saturday 13th December especially for those who didn't have the experience they were hoping for at Lapland New Forest. This extra day of celebration will only be available to those left disappointed at Lapland."

The Alton Towers event is now over subscribed and the venue is expecting 1,500 guests on Saturday 13th December. The resort is holding Christmas celebrations offering similar attractions, for paying customers, on December 7, 14, 20, 21, 22 and 23.

Lapland West Midlands, the second Lapland 'Blunderland' event to close, was due to take place near Essington, Staffordshire. The show organiser, Steven Jennings, posted a statement on the show's website stating: "Due to bad publicity and lack of ticket sales, we regret that Lapland West Midlands will not be opening as planned on 6 December 2008 and the event has been cancelled."

South Staffordshire District Council also stated that the event did not have an entertainment licence, which it would have needed to go ahead. Another reason which the organiser used to justify cancelling the attraction.

This news comes within a few days of The Lapland New Forest attraction shutting down due to thousands of complaints from visitors saying it was a ‘scam' and did not live up to the features promised on its website.
