Sci Fi wins UIP sponsorship deal for Romero's zombie night

LONDON - The Sci Fi Channel has inked a five-figure sponsorship deal with United International Pictures to promote its George A Romero-directed 'Land of the Dead' zombie movie via a themed evening hosted by the cult horror director.

On September 17, the Sci Fi channel will host a zombie-themed evening with Romero's two most famous films, 'Dawn of the Dead' and 'Night of the Dead', to raise awareness of the soon-to-be released 'Land of the Dead' film and the theatrical release a week later.

The deal includes pre-promotion in early September, sponsorship bumpers, a bespoke microsite and an on-air and online promotion.

Romero will not only introduce his film on the night but will present a guide on how to survive a zombie invasion.

UIP's 'Land of the Dead' film, featuring 'Hannibal' actor Anthony Hopkins and 'The Ring Two' actor Simon Baker, will additionally benefit from promotional trailers on Sci Fi this month.

Sci Fi account manager Stella Onuorah, Zenith Optimedia's Ricki Assenheim and UIP's senior media manager Stephen Hunt brokered the deal.

Onuourah said securing George A Romero's movies was a major coup for Sci Fi.

"The movies of seminal director George A Romero have long resonated with Sci Fi's audience so we're absolutely thrilled to be promoting his latest movie and to have secured his participation in the project," she said.

The deal follows UIP's 'Van Helsing' and 'The Grudge' movies sponsoring content on Sci Fi last year.
