Sainsbury's to lose senior duo in marketing cull

Two of Sainsbury's most senior marketers are leaving over the next two months as part of the overhaul of its marketing team.

Dominic Rowell, head of national advertising, will leave the firm in April, while Jonathan Latham, head of direct marketing, is thought to be leaving this month. In all, up to 100 of the department's 300 staff will leave.

Rowell has been working with director of brand communications Helen Buck as the supermarket reviews its £56m advertising business. It has now shortlisted incumbent Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO, Bartle Bogle Hegarty, JWT and Leo Burnett. The pitch will take place in April.

The departures come as the struggling supermarket embarks on a recruitment drive for what it has described as 'marketing experts', including brand specialists and senior marketers.

According to a spokeswoman, there is a lack of key middle-management marketers. It is recruiting for several positions, including loyalty manager, nutrition and health manager and head of revenue generation in its brand communications team.
