
The first event takes place on 27 April and will run every month. For the inaugural event, Sainsbury's is banning disposable bags for one day and is planning to give away seven million reusable shopping bags, which normally cost 10 pence each.
Sainsbury's customer director Gwyn Burr said the company was launching the initiative to champion specific environmental issues and encourage customers to make simple steps to achieve real change.
The retailer said on average customer will re-use the ‘Bags for Life' at least 20 times saving an estimated 90m disposable bags.
