Sainsbury's adds gift-card range

Sainsbury's is to sell pre-paid gift cards for third-party retailers as part of its Christmas trading strategy.

The scheme, which is the first of its kind for the supermarket, will launch at the end of November and include cards redeemable at Habitat, Debenhams, Miss Selfridge, Toni&Guy, Wallis, Burton and Comet. They will also be redeemable at Legoland, Chessington World of Adventures, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers and the London Eye.

The cards will be displayed on Sainsbury's-branded free-standing card units. They will be inactive until taken to the point of sale, where they can be charged up. The associated greetings cards will be free.

Although the retailer will not have a gift card of its own on the stand, it is understood to be planning one for 2007.

The project has been jointly conceived by Sainsbury's and pre-paid card specialist Incomm Europe.
