Sainsbury's adds Fairtrade clothes

Sainsbury's is converting key lines of its Tu clothing brand to 100% Fairtrade cotton as it steps up its investment in ethical products.

By early January, all men's standard T-shirts and more than half of women's will be made from Fairtrade cotton. It also plans to convert 25% of its cotton jerseys.

As part of its 'Same price, different values' strategy, the prices of all the items will remain the same, with the retailer investing £1m to absorb the extra cost involved.

The supermarket also plans to convert its own-brand tea to Fairtrade over the next three years, making it the UK's biggest seller of products in this category.

The activity comes as Sainsbury's drives through a programme of store extensions to accommodate its non-food offering. It aims to boost sales over the next three years to £3.5bn, with a third of that coming from non-food.

Planned additions to the Tu range next spring include plus and petite lines.
