RSPCA urges public to protest at badger cull in new ad campaign

LONDON – The RSPCA is launching an advertising campaign in national press today to protect the badgers of England from slaughter.

The "Back Off Badgers" campaign, created in-house, is the animal welfare charity's message urging members of the public to lobby ministers about the proposed mass badger cull before the end of the public consultation on March 10.

At present, badgers are protected by law, but the government is consulting on whether -- and how --- badgers should be killed. They could be shot, snared or even gassed starting as early as the summer.

Farmers believe that badgers are to blame for bovine TB, a strain of tuberculosis spreading among cows, and wants a cull to protect their herds. The charity believes that cattle-to-cattle spread is much more likely.

Colin Booty, senior scientific officer at the charity, said: "The RSPCA believes that badgers are being made the scapegoats for a rise in bovine TB in cattle."

The RSPCA is urging everyone to voice concerns by email or post directly to the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, or by texting the word BADGER to 60022.
