
The charities joined with Animal Aid, the Born Free Foundation, OneKind, the Captive Animals’ Protection Society and Viva! to pen a join letter to David Field, the zoological director of the Zoological Society of London.
In the note, they highlight reports that ‘members of the public were apparently able to disturb and even injure the animals in the enclosures’. They also cite specific instances where one guest reportedly tried to pour beer on a tiger and another attempted to undress and enter the enclosure.
The letter also states that hosting events in the zoo outside of normal daytime hours would interrupt the animals’ sleep schedule.
has so far gained almost 75,000 signatures, while Westminster Council is currently investigating the situation.
More than 6,000 people have attended the events this summer. In August, a spokesperson from the zoo said: "The wellbeing of our animals is always our first priority and we would like to reassure those people that have taken the time to sign the petition, that we would not continue to run any event or activity which compromised this, in anyway."
