Roof blaze will not delay The Hydro opening, say bosses

Bosses at The Hydro, Scotland's newest event space, say the £125m stadium is still scheduled to open in September, despite a fire tearing through the building's roof last Saturday (8 June).

Owners of the 12,000-seater venue, which belongs to the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre in Glasgow, were in doubts as to whether with would be able to go ahead on on 30 September.

In a statement released this morning (17 June), The Hydro said that its building contractor, Lend Lease, completed its water and fire damage assessment last weekend.

A spokesperson said: "Whilst the damage is not as severe as first feared, there remains a number of areas, especially around the roof, that could still impact on the construction programme for completing the Hydro in time for the opening period. Many of these remediation issues have been addressed with the sub-contractors and loss adjusters but a number remain to be discussed and agreed.

"As a consequence, the construction project remains on target for September completion albeit with some additional challenges that require to be fully resolved. Everyone involved in the project remains sharply focused on achieving our opening night concert with Rod Stewart on 30 September.

"While there remains some residual risk, the SEC team will do all we can to support the construction team and be ready for the September opening. We will continue to provide regular updates to promoters, artist management and fans as we work to clear these issues."

Forty firefighters from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue used specialist high-reach equipment to extinguish the flames, which are believed to have been caused by a welder’s sparks.
