Rival air carriers put freeze on 9/11 ads

LONDON - British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are to suspend all marketing activity in the run-up to September 11 out of respect for the victims of last year's terrorist atrocities.

Rival air carriers put freeze on 9/11 ads

The rival airlines will not run any advertising, promotional or PR activity in the period surrounding the first anniversary of the attacks.

A BA spokeswoman said the company had decided independently that it would be insensitive to continue marketing while people's thoughts were on the events of September 11. BA will cease marketing the weekend before the anniversary and says it is unlikely to resume until almost a week after.

Rival Virgin Atlantic will stop all marketing for a similar period. It said it had opted for a "low-key" approach because it was what both customers and staff wanted.

The airlines' approach underlines the sensitivity of September 11 for marketers, particularly those in the airline, travel and tourism industries. Several US television networks have announced they will not be carrying ads on the day.

ITV announced last week that it would forego £1m in peak-time advertising revenue during the broadcast of a programme dedicated to the victims of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
