Reebok answers Nike with US viral campaign in UK

Reebok is using viral marketing to introduce to UK consumers an ad campaign that has taken the US by storm. The firm believes it can outdo Nike with the ads' 'edginess'.

The work features 'Terry Tate', a menacing American Footballer who punishes people he takes exception to.

After the campaign debuted in the US during last month's Super Bowl, the Terry Tate web site registered 2.7 million page impressions in two days. It has received extensive press coverage in the US, and made the top ten in USA Today's 'Super Bowl Ad Meter'.

The campaign will launch in the UK in the form of an intensive viral drive through Cake, while Reebok decides whether to bring it to TV here. There will also be a dedicated Terry Tate web site at thepaintrain.co.uk.

The campaign consists of eight executions featuring Terry in various situations such as in the office and on holiday. He smashes into people at breakneck pace and tackles them.

One of the spots plays on Reebok's rivalry with Nike in a blatant retort to a Nike US viral ad showing a streaker disrupting a British football match clad in Shox trainers. The execution shows Tate abruptly ending the streaker's show by slamming him violently to the ground.
