Redwood to publish Virgin Media magazine

LONDON - Virgin Media is planning a magazine for its 3.3m digital subscribers and has appointed Redwood Publishing to manage its publishing strategy.

The publication will play a key role in the newly-formed TV company's effort to regain consumer confidence after its public spat with BSkyB.

Redwood beat Square One and John Brown, which recently lost the contract to publish Sky's magazine to News Magazines, to the deal.

James Kydd, Virgin Media's managing director of marketing, said he was exploring several publishing opportunities with Redwood, but ruled out Sky's approach of combining a magazine for all subscribers with special interest titles for subscribers to sports and film packages.

"It is extremely unlikely that we will use the Sky approach to market as a benchmark," he said. "Redwood's grasp of the possibilities impressed us."

Brian Whittaker, the former group publisher for home interest titles at BBC Magazines who previously published Age Concern's Heyday magazine for Redwood, will lead the publishing strategy.
